This is not a participation award. It is earned, and it carries real weight: it belongs on a college application, a resume, and a wall. Five checkpoints mark a student's journey from beginner completion to a professional track, each available at Standard, Distinguished, or Honors tiers. There is no annual test date. A student is assessed when their teacher knows they are truly ready, through a recital they are already performing in. Each certificate is signed by the student's teacher, Chetan Tierra, and Melissa Tierra, and presented publicly.

Honors is not applied for and not tested into. It is given, by Chetan and Melissa, to students whose playing rises clearly above their peers. Most of the time it is obvious: the student plays and the room knows. Honors students share a real, self motivated passion for the craft, musical playing that consistently stands out, and calm command under pressure. The designation is difficult to earn, stable once achieved, and should feel honored, never anxious.

Students who regularly hear professional performers develop a different relationship with music. Six or more curated performances a year bring faculty, visiting guest artists, and advanced students onto the stage, set right alongside the recitals students already attend. Hearing music at this level, in an intimate setting, from the artists who teach here, quietly raises the standard a student plays to.

Getting into a top summer festival or conservatory isn't a matter of matching a profile against a database. It's a teacher who has performed on those same stages, studied under those same faculty, and can pick up the phone. Our faculty know many of the people running these programs personally, through shared conservatories, competitions, and festival circuits, and they use those relationships to place students where they'll actually thrive. When an sdpa student auditions, they walk in prepared by someone who knows what it's like to stand in the same room.
