Piano Lessons in Carmel Valley & Rancho Peñasquitos
San Diego Piano Academy has taught here in Carmel Valley and Rancho Peñasquitos longer than the other academies in the area, since 2010, founded by concert pianists Chetan and Melissa Tierra and now home to eight of our faculty, including the founders themselves. We teach one instrument, piano, exclusively, with a faculty of credentialed concert artists and a deep track record of prize-winning students. Beginners, casual learners, and serious competitors all study side by side here, backed by programs a single teacher or a multi-instrument school can't offer.
In 2026, sdpa students took all three top spots in the 15-18 division at the MTAC Southern Regional, the largest competition stage in Southern California. Our students go on to top conservatories.
A Banner Year
Meet Chetan and Melissa, and the sdpa Carmel Valley / Rancho Peñasquitos team

Chetan and Melissa Tierra co-founded sdpa in 2016, but their teaching in this specific community goes back even further, to 2010. Today this is home base for eight of our faculty, including the founders themselves, serving students of every level: first lessons for beginners, steady progress for casual learners, and serious training for competitors, all in the same community.
Chetan is a celebrated international concert pianist, a Yamaha Artist, and one of only four Americans to compete at the 2009 Van Cliburn Competition. Melissa is an internationally acclaimed concert pianist and educator known for premiering works by more than a dozen living composers, with performances across the U.S. and in Austria, Italy, Belgium, and Israel, and her work has been featured in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
This is also where sdpa's competition results are most concentrated. Local students Luna Lee, Colvin Davis, and Sage Taylor, all training with Chetan, took first, second, and third place in the 15 to 18 category at the Southern California State Concerto Competition in 2026, a clean sweep of one of the state's most competitive age brackets. That same year, Chetan ran his first MTAC State Finals as the newly appointed Southern California Chair.
Melissa's own studio, based right here, has produced results year after year. This year alone, local students Arianna Gago and Meena Hernandez placed at the Chopin competition, Arianna taking third and Meena an Honorable Mention, part of sdpa faculty's sweep of 17 of the 35 total prizes awarded at the 2026 Chopin Festival. Arianna also earned an Honorable Mention at the Concerto Competition and spent her summer at Colburn Tonebase's piano program, building the kind of early conservatory connections that matter for college auditions.
This isn't a one-year story. Since 2018, sdpa students trained right here in Carmel Valley and Rancho Peñasquitos, across both Chetan's and Melissa's studios, have been top prize winners at local and international competitions, going on to Peabody Conservatory, where one now studies with celebrated pianist Steven Spooner, as well as UT Austin, UCLA, and Berklee.
But competition results are only part of the picture here. Many students who study with sdpa in Carmel Valley and Rancho Peñasquitos are learning piano for the love of it, not chasing a trophy, and our full faculty here is built to serve that range well.

What a Full Academy Offers That a Single Teacher Can't
What a single teacher can't offer is the rest of what sdpa builds around every student: a full recital calendar where your student performs alongside dozens of other serious, motivated pianists, a peer effect that pushes students further than practicing in isolation, a concert artist series featuring our own faculty performing regularly, masterclasses, practicing and performance workshops, adult student workshops, and guest artists visiting from institutions like the Cleveland Institute of Music. Our faculty includes some of the most accomplished pianists in San Diego, arguably the best in the city. sdpa combines that individual talent with the compounding effect of a full institution built around your student's growth, not just one great teacher working alone.
